Writing Outside Your Comfort Zone

Curb Magazine

I have been MIA for a while now due to one large project: Curb Magazine. I attempted (and was unsuccessful) at NaNoWriMo this year because I was busy creating a website and writing stories for the magazine. And you know what? It was HARD.

I like to think writing comes naturally to me, but writing in the style for the magazine was one of the most difficult writing challenges I have faced. But I think it has made me a better writer. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that it is important for writers to write outside their comfort zone. For me, it made me focus on different aspects of writing, ones that I wouldn’t in my scholarly essay/YA fiction writing endeavors.

With that, I challenge you all to attempt to write something that isn’t what you normally write. Whether that means trying something short if you are a novel person, or going horror if you are realistic fiction. It’s fun to play around with different genres or basic styles of writing and can help your writers block.

Right now I don’t have a go-to other genre, I haven’t played much around with that yet. Are there any that you all like best?
